Toby was the Thornton family dog. In Oklahoma, June 1969, Mr. Thornton was watching metrologist Gary England on television. England relayed that an F5 tornado was on it's way to hit the Thornton family farm.
Mr. Thornton grabs his daughter Jo, and tells his wife to run for the 'fraidy hole. Jo screams for Toby, who comes running after the family, and almost doesn't make it to the storm cellar. They get in, and lock the door, just before the F5 tornado hits. The storm is so violent, it starts to shake the storm cellar door open. Mr. Thornton thinks the only thing he can do is try to hold the door shut.
Unfortunately, instead of keeping the door closed, the door and Mr. Thornton are sucked up into the tornado. He's killed, while Mrs. Thornton, Jo and Toby can do nothing but stand and helplessly watch as he's sucked into the F5 tornado.
